Mission Statement

 Our mission is to provide a safe and respectful environment for boys to play and learn the game of lacrosse.  We will prepare players for the YHS lacrosse program by teaching the fundamentals. In addition to fundamentals, there will be a focus on:

•     Respect -- Respect for your coaches, teammates, officials and opponent.

•    Teamwork -- Lacrosse is a team sport.  Teamwork is a "life skill" that young athletes will benefit from on and off of the lacrosse field.

•    Commitment -- Every player is expected to come to the field with a positive attitude and be ready to play on time.  

About The Season

  •  We play in the Maine Youth Lacrosse League   Please sign up your son through Yarmouth Community Services  (YCS).
  •  Practices typically begin the first week after April break.  If the weather permits, practices could begin earlier in April. 
  •  There are practices twice a week.  
  • Games are generally played on Saturdays and will start  at the beginning of May & go through the middle of June (season is done before school is done).
  • Teams are balanced and are divided by grades:  3rd/4th & 5th/6th play together.

Boys' Lacrosse Equipment needed:

•    Lacrosse stick

•    Helmet NOCSAE approved (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment)

•    Mouth guard (must be worn at all times)  Shock Doctor is one suggested brand. 

•    Shoulder pads

•    Elbow pads

•    Lacrosse gloves

•    Protective cup

•    Cleats 

Goalie equipment is provided by YCS. Goalkeepers wear everything that all players wear (helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads) along with a throat guard and chest protector. They may also wear shin guards. 

Starter equipment sets are available at both LAXPROS and Dick's Sporting Goods .  An online option is Sportstop.

1.  Sticks

Stick length: Stick length for 5/6 grade players shall be 40-42". Stick length for 3/4 grade players shall be 37-42". YCS will provide the goalie stick.

Existing Sticks:  Please feel free to ask one of the coaches if you have any questions about your child’s stick.

Restringing Options: Sticks can be restrung.  The Boosters have starter stringing kits available as well as hard mesh replacement pockets.

•    Sticks work best if they include a hard or medium mesh pocket. Hard and medium mesh has a special coating that helps create a proper pocket shape and helps the pocket retain its shape and performance even in wet weather.

•    Many lower-priced sticks come pre-strung with soft mesh. Soft mesh is initially easier to work with but performs poorly over time and loses its effectiveness in wet weather.  If your son’s stick throws straight down…soft mesh could be the problem. 

•    Overly stiff mesh is also found in lower-priced sticks and has almost no give, resulting in the lack of a pocket.  This can be a challenge when learning to throw and catch or to keep possession of the ball when running.  The ball can fly out of the pocket immediately.

•    Poorly performing mesh leads to difficulty in mastering lacrosse fundamentals such as catching and throwing, and translates into frustration for beginning players. Lacrosse is played rain or shine, so it is important that an athlete’s equipment is appropriate for both. 

2.  Protective Gear:

New players may be able to purchase a protective equipment package. These packages include shoulder pads, elbow pads, and gloves. Helmets are purchased separately.

•    Helmets:  In general the Cascade and Brine series of helmets are very good and fit a wide variety of heads;It is up to the players comfort level which brand they choose.  A white helmet is recommended.  Typically a helmet lasts for a few years.  It is recommended to avoid "used" helmets older than 2 years.

3.  Cleats:  

 In general, soccer or football cleats work as well as lacrosse-specific cleats. Baseball cleats or running shoes are not appropriate; baseball cleats are not designed for quick cuts and lots of running.
